Greene King IPA is urging pubs to make the most of the opportunity the RBS Six Nations brings to increase beer sales during February and March 2008.

Following recent worrying industry statistics, which showed an on-trade beer sales decline of ten per cent year on year in November, the Suffolk brewer has issued a rallying cry to pubs. It says that smart promotions during the Six Nations will help drive customers back into the pub.

Fiona Hope, Greene King marketing director said, "Figures show that during September and October 2007 sales of Greene King IPA in our own Pub Company estate were up eight per cent in pubs participating in Rugby World Cup promotions. During the upcoming RBS Six Nations tournament, Greene King IPA will once again focus on driving people off their sofa and back into the pub where they can enjoy the atmosphere that England's live matches will provide."

Gregg Hollister licensee of The Mitre pub in Southampton, said: "During the Rugby World Cup the volume of people inside our pub was more than we had ever seen before. I expect this to carry over into the Six Nations as people still believe England are primed to do something amazing and takings will flourish on the back of that."

Thanks to a beer and food deal, involving a curry and pint for £5, The Mitre experienced the most profitable day in its three and a half year history during England's semi final, taking more money than any previous day, including New Years Eve.
