Barracuda defends £1 drinks night
Barracuda has come under fire for a £1 drinks night at its Barracuda Bar in Newquay, attended by Prince William, which ended in a reveller requiring 35 stitches following a bottle attack.
The Barracuda Bar runs a "£1 party night" on Fridays and Mondays and also advertises a "Sluts on the Dancefloor" evening on Saturdays where clubbers could get "SOTDF" (sex on the dance floor).
The Barracuda Bar also texts members what offers are available that evening.
Prince William visited the club on a surfing trip to Newquay and was seen drinking bottles of alcopop VK and vodka jelly shots.
He had already left when a 19-year-old was attacked with a bottle at around 130am.
Three men were arrested and released on bail and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Responsible promotion
But Barracuda has defended the promotion claiming it is responsible.
"It is really put into context when you look at the town's other bars and clubs which offer similar promotions and some, we believe, offering drinks as low as 60p," said spokeswoman Sarah Calderbank.
"While, as a company we do not operate a blanket approach to discounted promotions, there are certain cases where a value offer, such as £1 for selected drinks, combined with a minimum £3 door charge, ensures we are inline with the market competition in the immediate area.
"We believe this, as with all our offers, is a 'responsible promotion' and corresponds with our position as a responsible licensed retailer, because of the way in which we operate our premises."
The MA also found that all drinks in Bertie's nightclub are 80p on a Friday and £1 before midnight on Saturdays.
But others in the area are deeply unhappy and concerned at the deep discounting.
Inez Ward, Enterprise Inns tenant at Mavericks in Newquay, said: "How am I supposed to compete with pricing like that?
"On Friday's our pub empties and everyone heads off to the Barracuda Bar."
