Breakfast focus: Say cheese!
The changing breakfast habits of Britons offer new challenges as well as opportunities for pubs, according to Bel UK Foodservice, producer of several top cheese brands.
The shift away from the traditional breakfast means there iw an opportunity to provide a broader variety of early morning meals for consumers.
Synthia Kanda, brand manager at Bel UK, whose brands include Port Salut and Leerdammer, said: "The challenges for chefs are obvious- they need to find ways of satisfying the changing needs of consumers at a time when the traditional breakfast occasion is undergoing a transformation, but also need to encourage consumers into their pubs in the mornings with well prepared menus.
"Greater pressure on working hours and social changes mean fewer people have the time for a traditional sit-down breakfast. They tend to take breakfast on the move and want options that reflect their needs rather than waiting around to eat it sitting down."
Kanda adds: "The beauty of cheese is its versatility: it is ideal for satisfying a range of breakfast needs and can be used by caterers to give traditional recipe ideas a new twist that is more suitable for the 21st Century breakfast occasion."
Pubs should also cater for time poor consumers who want breakfast on the move by offering hand-held food to take away. "For example, consider the option of a 'Leerdammer Toastie' or a 'Port Salut and Smoked ham croissant'.
"By giving consumers a greater array of enticements, such as a breakfast menu that is relevant to their needs, they will be able to entice more people into their outlet."
