An Exeter site has re-opened as an upmarket gastropub shortly after being sold by Christie+Co. The Fat Pig, formerly the Coachmakers' Arms, has undergone a £100,000 re-fit and re-branding.

Owners Hamish and Rob Lothian said that the pub specialises in European peasant cookery and the dishes include slow roasted shoulder of lamb with olives and confit of duck.

Rob said: "We've had some great feedback. It's going really well."

The pair have a combined 40 years experience in the trade, having operated a number of pubs and bars.

Jon Clyne, of Christie+Co, said: "I sold this property to Hamish and Rob on behalf of Peninsula Inns last October against a background of competitive bidding due to the lack of available freehold pubs in the city. It is great that the business is in private ownership with enthusiastic hands-on owner/operators."

The brothers purchased the freehold business, which comprises a main bar/restaurant, courtyard and three-bedroom owners' accommodation, for an undisclosed figure off an asking price of £250,000.
