Mitton, Lancashire

leasehold from private company

Set within some of England's most beautiful countryside, the Three Fishes has been a haven for travellers and visitors for more than 400 years.

But in the last three years, it has undergone a renaissance that has made the current incarnation one of the most successful pubs in the land.

After lying empty for three years, the Three Fishes was relaunched by restaurateurs Craig Bancroft and Nigel Haworth, who also own Northcote Manor, the Michelin-starred restaurant near Blackburn.

Now the Three Fishes is a premier gastropub, with a menu stuffed full of traditional specialities and British classics created from the finest locally-sourced produce.

Recent additions to the menu include North Sea cod fishcakes, deep fried monkfish tails in breadcrumbs and Farmer Sharp's slow-cooked under-shoulder of mutton.

The Fishes has also introduced its own inimitable take on the traditional ploughman's lunch, which includes Sandham's creamy Lancashire cheese, celeriac and walnut salad, and organic bread.

According to marketing manager Kay Matthews, the success of the Fishes can be attributed to its commitment in sourcing regional foods and selecting seasonal dishes.

Drinks are also central to the pub's success. The Three Fishes' range of cask ales includes a selection from Thwaites Brewery, plus each month there is a featured guest ale from a regional brewery. There is also a selection of real draught German lager from Warsteiner and a German wheat beer, Konig Ludwig.

Quality food, fine drinks plus friendly and knowledgeable service all add up to make the Fishes a fine example of what an British pub can be at its very best.
