A Preston pub is to be a 'scores on the doors' ambassador after taking full marks in the city council's food safety scheme.

Preston is one of many authorities publishing food hygiene scores for businesses, and Marston's tenacy the Wellington Arms has scored the top five star rating.

The pub has now been chosen as the launch platform for the council's new Preston Foodsafe initiative, which aims to help food businesses raise hygiene standards as well as give customers an informed choice.

Tenant Cheryl Holmes and her partner George Brumler have run the town centre pub for 16 years. Cheryl said: "Preston Foodsafe is a great idea. We are always very careful about food hygiene and food safety and we are delighted to achieve top marks. We want our customers to enjoy their meal, but also for them to have full confidence in our standards.

"We were delighted to be chosen to host the launch event for Foodsafe and to receive our five star certificate from the Mayor. I think lots of people will be interested in the results of this initiative, which I'm sure will help to raise standards throughout the city."

L:ike other scores on the doors schemes, Preston is awarding each business a rating based on national guidelines set out by the Food Standards Agency. These range from five stars for the best performing businesses, such as the Wellington, down to zero for very poorly performing businesses where food contamination issues were found.
