Letter to every constituency stresses how banning can cut pub and club crime

National Pubwatch has written to every MP urging support for grassroots pubwatch groups.

The letter stresses how the "banned from one, banned from all" approach can slash crime at pubs and clubs.

It contains a DVD, made for the Sky Pub channel, showing how pubwatches in Derby and Reading caused violent crime to fall 23% and 25% respectively.

The letter says pubwatch "doesn't attract banner headlines" but is "a proven, cost- effective way of reducing drink-related violent crime in our towns and cities".

"We believe the problems associated with alcohol-related violent crime are best dealt with by the police and pub trade working together in partnership.

"We encourage local licensees to take the lead in setting standards of behaviour for their customers.

"The cornerstone of this is the sanction of banning problem individuals from every pub or club in the locality.

"We believe in the rights of the majority of the population to have a safe and enjoyable night out without fear of intimidation or violence.

"I know you will be impressed by the dedication of the individuals working in Derby and Reading, and surprised by the impressive results that they have achieved in bringing down crime.

"I would ask you the question — is this something that you would want to see in your area for the benefit of your constituents?"
