A famous Liverpool pub is preparing to re-open following the discovery of asbestos in its kitchen.

Thomas Rigby's, in the city centre, was shut down last month after the potentially deadly substance was found in its basement kitchen during preparations for a re-furbishment.

Workmen discovered the asbestos after removing a stud wall and three false ceilings.

The Okells Brewery-owned pub was sealed off to the public and contractors were hired to remove all traces.

However the business has continued to trade in the building next door, a former restaurant.

Nick Rahman, Thomas Rigby's assistant manager, said: "The place got sealed up by the Health and Safety Executive and the council. It's been tough, but we have managed to keep the business going in the restaurant."

The pub is scheduled to re-open on Tuesday May 20.

"We are just looking forward to re-opening and getting busy again," said Nick.

Asbestos diseases are caused by inhaling asbestos dust, a mineral commonly used in the construction industry until the 1970s. The main diseases caused by asbestos are asbestosis and pleural disease.

More than 3,000 people a year die of the disease in the UK and numbers are predicted to rise to 10,000 a year by 2020.
