Major pub operators shun 125ml wine glasses
There's a lack of damand for smaller serves, say operators

Major managed operators are choosing not to offer wine in 125ml glasses.

That's according to a survey by consumer group Which?, as calls mount for pubs to offer the smaller serve over fears customers don't understand the alcohol unit content.

The survey found JD Wetherspoon pubs and Marston's managed outlets only served by 175ml and 250ml glasses.

Mitchells & Butlers offered sparkling wine only in 125ml glasses; other wines were available in the larger servings only. Greene King said there's no standard practice and sizes range from 125ml to 250ml.

Spirit Group said a "small number of its outlets" offer 125ml glasses, adding: "Responsible retailing is at the very heart of what we do and all our pubs provide a safe and controlled environment in which we sell and monitor alcohol consumption."

Marston's Inns & Taverns marketing director Colin Sadler cited a "lack of demand from customers for smaller measures".

"This may in part be due to the size of glass consumers use to drink wine in their own homes and the occasion: i.e. linked to food and the interruptions to a meal caused by re-ordering.

"We have not had a single consumer-led request, email or written enquiry about smaller glassware for wine measures."

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "The two wine sizes work for the venues and they are what the customer wants."

The Scottish Government wants pubs that serve wine to provide 125ml servings. An Early Day Motion in the UK Parliament calling for the same thing has been signed by 42 MPs.
