A licensee has been stripped of his personal licence — and licensees of four pubs fined £20,000 between them — for screening Sky using domestic cards.

Birmingham licensee Yadvinder Singh was stripped of his licence, slapped with a £6,000 fine, and ordered to pay £809.74 costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.

Singh of the Brighton Arms, Small Heath, was convicted of three offences of dishonest reception of a television transmission.

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) said it has carried out 900 similar prosecutions to date — including 200 last season — and has a further 100 pending.

"The loss of a personal licence is the ultimate sanction the court can hand down in cases such as this, meaning that the person effectively loses their livelihood," said Fact prosecution manager Stephen Gerrard.

Licensees of the four Bristol pubs slapped with fines were: Alexandros Tryfonon and Kashif Rehman of Versa (£7,213.50 in fines and costs); Susan Coombes and Alan Davis of the Princess of Wales (£4,775.44); Andrew Calvey of Clifton Sports Bar (£4,578.14); and Kieron Ward of the Forresters Arms (£2,845.66).
