Reversing decline: MPs and trade leaders want tax relief
MPs and trade leaders have added their support to the British Property Federation's (BPF) campaign for reversal of empty property tax.

MPs and trade leaders have added their support to the British Property Federation's (BPF) campaign for reversal of empty property tax.

Association of Multiple Licensed Retailers communications director Kate Nicholls urged the Government to scrap the tax as pub owners have already been hit hard by the smoking ban and economic downturn.

"Re-evaluation should be seriously considered. More should be done to help businesses while there is still the chance," she said.

British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) communications director Mark Hastings said: "The more options there are for our pubs to get help, the better. It's an issue the BBPA is looking into."

An Early Day Motion opposing the tax has been signed by 26 MPs to date.

Proposed by Labour MP Linda Riordan, it said: "This House urges the Government to exercise its power to reintroduce empty property rate relief in response to the economic downturn and worsening conditions in the property market.

"Empty property rate relief is a tool used to stimulate investment and growth in the property market during times of economic difficulty. Relief withdrawal is having unintended consequences such as creating financial hardship on small businesses."
