The top judge of the BII NITA awards says just entering can help provide a boost to business.

Time is running out to enter the 2008 BII NITAs - which recognise training excellence - with the deadline of September 1 fast approaching.

And Professor Conrad Lashley, chairman of the panel of judges for the Publican-backed awards, said it is well worth making the effort to send in an application.

He said: "Everyone who enters receives feedback. In the first phase there is a paper exercise and those that are considered worthy of further investigation and those that are not all get feedback."

In the second stage businesses are visited by judges who put together a report which forms part of the information passed back to the entrant.

Prof Lashley, who is director of the Centre of Leisure Retailing at Nottingham Trent University, added: "Part of the result of this is that the quality of applications has improved year on year and so have the standards of training in the sector."

Overall there are 11 categories to enter for both individual licensees to pub companies - and you do not have to be a BII member to do so.
