Fifty thousand beer mats are being handed out to pubs, bars and clubs across Leicestershire to raise awareness of alcohol and domestic violence.

The summer campaign, which runs from from 18 to 25 August, aims to reach out to both people perpetrating domestic violence and victims of violence.

The beer mats and posters display the slogan "Alcohol: Mo Excuse!" and "Alcohol: No Escape?"

"Alcohol is present in many cases of domestic violence, so it is extremely positive to see agencies addressing this in partnership," said councillor Byron Rhodes.

"The benefit of this campaign is that it provides options and support for both victims and perpetrators with domestic violence and alcohol abuse.

"Victims of domestic violence live in constant fear, being controlled and threatened by their abusers. The very essence of domestic violence is control. In this context, alcohol should not be used as an excuse for physical, psychological or sexual abuse.

"For victims, alcohol may be a way of coping with each day by blotting out the pain. We encourage them to contact the helpline or go online to get confidential help and advice."
