Food operators have been told they risk losing their business if they don't adhere to food safety issues.

The stark warning comes from stock audit company Venners.

Health & safety general manager Stuart Knill said with the 'Scores on the Doors' initiative and bad practise being highlighted by TV programmes such as Rogue Restaurants it has never been more important for retailers to safeguard their reputation.

He said: "In these difficult trading times you can't afford to give customers any reason not to visit your establishment. In fact you need to give them every reason to visit.

"In the hospitality industry food safety is paramount as is customers' confidence in your establishment's ability to serve food safely. If you are unaware of industry standards and/or whether you business is achieving them, you put at risk your hard earned reputation, your custom and at worst your business."

A recent edition of Rogue Restaurants resulted in the resignation of kitchen staff and the manager at Yates's in Reading after an undercover reporter revealed hygiene breaches in the kitchen.
