Darts star Bobby George was on hand to present Lee Williams with a £1,000 cheque for charity after he won the Southern England regional final of the John Smith's People's Darts Championships.

Lee won the title at the Lakeside in Frimley Green, Surrey, on Sunday to book his place in the national quarter finals of the Publican backed event.

He and the seven other finalists will receive training from top darts players at the venues they represent before the next round of the tournament gets underway.

Lee, representing the Royal British Legion Club, Worcester Park, beat Gary Eagle, of the King William IV pub in Curry Rivel, Somerset in the final.

The eventual winner will pick up a further £14,000 for the charity of their choice plus the chance to play in professional tournaments.

Gareth Turner, senior brand manager - ale, Scottish & Newcastle UK, said: "We are tremendously excited about the potential that the John Smith's People's Darts competition has to become a 'must do' event in the pub and club sports calendar and the unique opportunity it offers to ordinary players to perform on the biggest darts stage in the world".

The John Smith's People's Darts Final will take place ahead of the BDO World Darts Final at the Lakeside on January 11.
