The English pub has scooped the award for 'outstanding contribution to tourism' at the England travel industry's Oscars.

The award, which has previously been won by the likes of the Queen and Sir Paul McCartney, was picked up by celebrity licensee and brewer Neil Morrissey on behalf of the trade at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence in York last night.

Vist England, which organised the Caravan Club-sponsored event, said the accolade had gone to pubs in recognition of the integral part they play in the fabric of the English way of life.

Visit England research shows many overseas tourists put visiting a pub high on their list of things to do when they come to England.

Neil, whose beer in support of The Publican's Proud of Pubs campaign will be available soon, said: "I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of everyone who loves their local pub and loves visiting pubs as they travel around the country.

"Having restored a pub myself at the centre of a village I really believe they are the heart and soul of communities and the place that should offer the best welcome to visitors."
