Doorstaff regulator the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has appointed Bill Butler as its new chief executive.

Doorstaff regulator the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has appointed Bill Butler as its new chief executive.

Butler, who is currently director of corporate services at the Gambling Commission, replaces Andy Drane who held the job on a temporary basis.

The announcement was made by SIA chairman Ruth Henig at the association's annual conference today.

Butler was previously finance director at the Healthcare Commission and has held a number of senior posts at the Audit Commission.

It is expected he will take up his new job later this summer.

"These are challenging times for the private security industry and I am looking forward to meeting and working with government, industry and other stakeholders to ensure the SIA continues to improve services for our customers, undertake enforcement activity and meet forthoming challenges facing the security industry," Butler said.

In December last year former chief executive Michael Wilson left the association following the news it had received £17.4m of extra public funding due to administration problems and poor forecasting of licensing demands.
