Pubco launches Apprentice comp of its own
A pub company boss has taken on the role of Sir Alan Sugar in a bid to find a star apprentice in his team.
Dave Burr, who heads up the 16-strong Wycombe Pub Company, invited staff from across the estate to take part in a challenge inspired by the hit BBC show.
The 15 who signed up were split into teams and given a budget to come up with ideas to drive business at the pubs, based in and around High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
And although Dave is not planning on firing anyone the teams are being whittled down week by week and the winner will pick up a £2,000 training package to help them on the path to becoming a pub manager.
Dave, who has leases and tenancies with companies including Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns, said: "I have been amazed at how people have thrown themselves into this and just wish I had done it before.
"Everyone has given 110 per cent so it has been really difficult to trim the teams after each task."
Those taking part include barstaff, glass collectors and chefs. So far they have come up with ideas such as holding barbecues, cocktail events and drinks promotions to drive business and turn a profit from the £400 each team was initially given.
Dave, with the help of two advisors who keep a close eye on the teams, has now reduced the competition to just four contestants.
They are set to go through a rigourous interview process with Dave, a regional manager and a recruitment consultant.
The final two will then host separate events at pubs in the estate before a winner is announced in July.
Dave said: "I am really looking for a manager from this so the winner will definitely be the next in line.
"But it's not just about winning it's about staff members working together as a team, thinking outside of the box and having fun."
