Why they are on the list:

The trio run Greene King's managed pub estate, which currently numbers 783 houses. The Loch Fyne seafood restaurant chain has now been fully integrated into the estate.

What the past year has held:

Like all managed operators, Greene King has struggled to combat the economic downturn, but initiated a number of specific actions to maintain its competitive position.

The company pushed the value button hard with food offers to attract extra footfall. Its "feed a family of four for just £12" and senior citizens' offers proved a big success. The company said tough trading conditions had inevitably put margins under pressure.

Challenges ahead:

Preserving or increasing market share with more value offers looks on the cards, as the recession shows no immediate sign of abating.
