JD Wetherspoon has struck a deal with Oldham Council meaning it will avoid having to face licence reviews at its two pubs in the town.

The council has caused controversy by setting out plans to review the licence of all 22 town centre venues, including plans to introduce measures such as a Post Office-style queuing system at bars.

But Wetherspoons has agreed new licence conditions with the council for the Up Steps Inn and the Squire Knott, which means the venues will not face formal hearings.

The council said the company "responded positively" and "accepted they can do more to tackle irresponsible behaviour".

Cllr Mark Alcock, the council's cabinet member for infrastructure & environment, said: "I am pleased that Wetherspoon has set a clear example for the trade in both accepting their share of responsibility for poor behaviour in the town centre and in offering their full support to improving our town centre for the benefit of all residents and visitors."

As a part of the deal, Wetherspoons will risk assess drinks promotions and make sure "appropriate measures" are in place to ensure its offers do not contribute to problems in the town.

John Hutson, Wetherspoons' chief executive, said: "Wetherspoon wants what any sensible person wants, which is a safe and friendly environment where people can enjoy themselves.

"By working closely with the local authority, trading standards and the police I am confident we can contribute to an improvement in standards in pubs and bars in the town centre."

However, the council said the other 20 premises currently being reviewed will continue to hearings unless similar acceptable deals can be struck.

Trade leaders have been attempting to negotiate a deal with the council to stop the blanket licence reviews, but have admitted a legal challenge would be mounted if the council pressed ahead with its plans.
