More pubs than ever are growing their own produce - and one East End local in London is proving that you don't have to be out in the country to do it.

Regulars at the Coburn Arms, Bow, are enjoying fresh vegetables grown by licensee Norma Footman, who manages the Young's pub with husband Peter.

Tomatoes, courgettes and lettuce grown in the pub's garden have already appeared on the menu, with the promise of rhubarb, leeks, carrots and more as the growing season continues across the summer.

Norma said: "I've always used fresh vegetables in the pub, and grow my own herbs - staff are used to popping out for fresh mint when someone orders a Pimm's.

"Last year I grew tomatoes and they were so popular -and tasty - I decided to plant a vegetable garden."

Although the pub has a large outside seating area at the front, the rear garden cannot be used by customers due to planning restrictions. "After eight years at pub, I'm glad we've found a way to use the garden" said Norma.

"Now, of course, all the customers want to see where the veg comes from, so I'm having to do guided tours - one at a time."
