These two traditional events, hot on the heels of one another, should be fun-filled with everyone taking part enjoying two nights of themed celebrations - but with both nights there are underlying risks, which must be considered.

First, let's take a look at the centuries-old tradition of Hallowe'en and its potential hazards. In participating establishments, bar and lounge areas are transformed into the haunts of witches, ghouls, ghosts and weird beasties by clever use of cardboard, streamers, atmospheric coloured papers and other fanciful items.

Will the fun atmosphere prevail when the candles are lit? For there is no greater fire risk than having lighted candles around highly combustible decorations - with the slightest draught it could become your worst nightmare.

Keeping this in mind, all staff should constantly be aware of the potential hazards and stay alert to deal with any possible fire incidents.

Even greater are the risks inherent with Bonfire Night celebrations. The fire itself should be well positioned and lit on the site's car park or similar open space and the fireworks should be under the control of, and only set off by, someone who is registered and licensed to do so. On no account allow indoor fireworks. It is simply not worth the risk.

At both parties food is also likely to feature high on the agenda, so be sure that vigorous hygiene standards are observed.

With all these measures in place, I wish you a happy, safe and profitable Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes Night.
