Police have apologised to a Worthing licensee after a clerical error labelled his pub a major troublespot.

Statistics published on Monday by Sussex Police under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act claimed the Elms pub had been the centre of 278 incidents over the past four years including crimes and antisocial occurrences.

"A chief inspector has apologised to my wife and me," said licensee Glenn Wheatley.

"The police have ony been called twice in the three years we've been here.

"I hope it doesn't adversely affect business but I won't know for a few days."

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "The statistics relating to the Elms pub on the FOI response incorrectly included the wider area of Broadwater Street East.

"An administrative error was made and we have contacted the pub licensees to apologise for any confusion or upset this may have caused.

"The FOI request has been retracted and will be available once corrections are made."
