Pub goers will now be able to order flowers, drop off their dry cleaning or order a take-away pizza while enjoying a pint, thanks to a new initiative launched by Scottish & Newcastle pub Company (S&NPC).

The new Bar Boosters scheme will allow S&NPC tenants to offer customers a range of 17 services at the bar. It believes licensees could boost profits by between £1,000 and £10,000.

Operational and marketing specialists at S&NPC have spent the last year identifying the best ways for pubs to generate extra income. They have pinpointed the most suitable options for different pub types and put together promotional material, created brands for offers, established partnerships with suppliers and sought feedback from lessees.

The programme comes complete with a how to guide and all S&NPC Business Development Managers have been trained in the new scheme.

"Bar Boosters is the single most important marketing activity being undertaken by S&NPC this year," said said S&NPC head of marketing Matthew Woodward.

"It is designed to address customer fall off and to strengthen the pub's role as Britain's favourite place away from home and work.

"Whilst the impact of the economy should not be underestimated, the long term decline in visits to the pub have resulted from the home entertainment revolution, an imported café culture, longer working hours, an ageing population and varying retail pub standards.

"If we are going to get people back in our pubs we need to consider what other roles the pub could play in society and how best to equip them for that task.

"The Bar Boosters plan is designed to help pubs to provide a wider and more appropriate range of social, work and community related community services and facilities.

"We anticipate the services will be added to over time and that the pubs that will benefit most will be those offering multiple Bar Boosters services."

The initial partners include Sporting Live, Payzone, Innbloom, Movies to Go, Flowerfete, Café Bar, DDC, Papa John's Pizza, Cloud, Jumbucks and Useyourlocal.com.

Its new Bar Booster brands include: InnSpace — for business and entertainment functions; InnStore — for grocery sales; Good to Go for takeaway food and drink.
