The old Gales brewery site in Horndean — now owned by Fuller's — is set to be the subject of a £20m redevelopment scheme that will create 100 new homes.

The project is awaiting planning approval, which when rubber stamped will see Fuller's sell the 160-year-old brewery and adjacent land to Burton Properties, a developer.

Fuller's said that the development of the site, which was decommissioned as a brewery soon after the London-based brewer and pub operator bought Gales for £98.1m in 2006, would not trigger a windfall for the group.

Michael Turner, executive chairman, said: "We have built a new distribution depot nearby and the sale will pay for that, but it's not really material in terms of profit to us."

Developers plan to retain the brewery tower and a number of other historic buildings.
