An Essex licensee is celebrating the World Cup by turning his pub into a football pitch.

Southend pub the Parson's Barn is now sporting wall-to-wall turf, complete with goals either end and a central circle as a tribute to the tournament.

Football-mad licensee Mark Wenn said customer reactions have included "shock and laughter", and said his new floor does not take much looking after.

"At the end of the night we brush it and give it a bit of water," he explained. "It looks fantastic and is in much better condition than the pitch at Wembley."

The grass will remain until the World Cup ends on 11 July.
