Philip Jansen has started in his role as chief executive of Brakes Group, the wholesale food supplier.

Jansen's appointment was announced in October last year and he begins his duties today, replacing Frank McKay, who is retiring from the business.

Dwight Poler, Brakes' chairman, said Jansen was "an outstanding appointment who will build on the group's strong foundations".

Jansen, who joins Brakes from food services group Sodexo, said he was "delighted to lead the business and build on its considerable success in the UK, Ireland, France and Sweden".

Brakes' turnover for 2009 was eight per cent to £2.2bn, with UK revenue rising seven per cent.
