Multiple operators should use upcoming refurbishments at new sites as an opportunity to join a scheme to slash energy bills.

That's according to Dominic Burbridge, sector manager for hospitality at the Carbon Trust, which is urging pub operators, brewers and other in the sector to take advantage of its Best Advice campaign.

It provides free energy saving advice for businesses that spend between £50,000 and £3m per year on energy — and typically lead to 20%-30% savings.

Burbridge told the Morning Advertiser: "What's been happening with pub companies selling off pubs has been the resurgence of small multiples; they will be refurbishing pubs at the moment.

"This is a great opportunity to incorporate energy efficiency measures now."

He said kitchen renovations could be a particularly useful area for multiple operators to seek savings, with ventilation and refrigeration being two areas where wastage is common.

East Anglia launch

The campaign received its East Anglian launch this week, with backing from Greene King.

The brewer has cut CO2 emissions by 9% in the past two years and has been recognised by the Carbon Trust Standard.

Brewery boss Justin Adams, who described it as the "best advice any business will get this year", said its Turn It Off campaign saved more than £200,000 alone.

Brewer Hall & Woodhouse and nightclub operator Novus Leisure are among the other companies to take advantage of the scheme.

Meanwhile, a new Carbon Trust survey of East Anglian businesses found 50% are worried about energy price hikes. And 46% said reducing energy use is among their top three resolutions.
