African communities are to receive a huge boost thanks to the fundraising efforts of a pub group.

The Head of Steam, which has venues across the North of England, is nearing its £15,000 target for the charity WaterAid.

Over the last 12 months the chain has had collection boxes in pubs which have been matched by head office donations. It has also donated profits from coffee sales to the cause.

So far £12,000 has been raised and this is going to help provide clean water in seven areas in Mali.

Throughout next week - including Mali Independence Day on September 22 - the chain will celebrate with a range of activities, such as selling African inspired food and cocktails, to help hit the target.

Ian Taylor, Head of Steam operations manager, said: "We wish to finalise funding for this project and thought a promotional period around this time would be a good reminder of actually how well off we all are in Britain.

"It is a great cause and WaterAid is a charity with which we have a long term relationship, which we are sure will continue for many years to come."

He added: "We do try and keep a light hearted approach to the things we do, but we will be trying to put a message across of how terrible a situation the people of Mali are in and how a relatively small donation can make a world of difference."

The Publican is also raising funds for WaterAid this year and is encouraging licensees to sign up to Tap into WaterAid, where customers are encouraged to donate cash when they order tap water.
