Moorhouse's has unveiled its brand new £4.2m state-of-the-art brewery on a 5,000 square foot site near to its historic nineteenth century headquarters in Burnley, Lancashire.

The new complex, which is now in the commission phase, will triple brewing capacity to 1,000 barrels a week and also boast a new brewery training school, visitors' centre, bar, restaurant and function suite.

The building is designed on a traditional tower brewery format and will enable Moorhouse's to cut shifts from ten to four brews per week.

Significant environmentally friendly features have been incorporated into the design including a water harvesting system saving the company £12,000 a year in water charges.

The brewery project has been funded through a combination of bank finance and grants plus private investment by company directors headed by entrepreneur chairman Bill Parkinson.

The company said savings made by progressive beer duty had also enabled significant investment to be made in the new scheme.

A total of 44 staff will be employed on the site, an increase of 17 on current levels, which includes three extra sales executives, two additional warehouse posts and two more administrative staff.

Managing director David Grant said the launch of the new brewery was an historic milestone for 145 years old Moorhouse's.

"The new brewery must be welcome news for an industry which has taken such a severe beating recently.

"It also graphically underlines the growing importance of cask ale in the beer category and the growth in national real ale volumes over recent years.

"We will now be able to offer a range of other attractions and services including a training school which will provide qualifications in cask ale brewing and cellar management," he said.

Full-time brewing on the new site is expected to start in early November and all three phases of the overall project completed by next April.
