Guests dug deep to raise thousands of pounds at The Publican's first ever charity pub quiz last night.

Licensees, lawyers, brewers and beer lovers were among those taking part in the fundraiser for WaterAid at Wetherspoons' pub the Knights Templar in Holborn, Central London.

Over nine hotly-contested rounds, 26 teams from across the industry pitted their wits against each other in a battle to be crowned quiz champions.

And in a close run contest The Pride of Chiswick, representing Fuller's brewery, came out on top.

Meanwhile, teams trying to gain a sneaky advantage by using mobile phones were fined by eagle-eyed helpers, to help boost the total.

And members of The Publican team even dressed up as a tap and a toilet in a bid to recoup more cash from sympathetic guests.

The cash is still being counted but so far funds raised from fines, donations and a raffle have already brought in around £4,000.

WaterAid's Susie Henderson said: "Thanks to everyone who got involved at the quiz. The money raised is enough to help over 250 people gain access to safe water and sanitation, which is truly amazing."

Publican editor - and quiz host - Caroline Nodder added: "It was fantastic to see so many people from across the trade getting involved and supporting the event.

"Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a memorable night and one that we hope will become a fixture on the calendar."

The Publican is supporting WaterAid this year and encouraging pubs to sign up to The Tap into WaterAid initiative.

So far more than 300 pubs have got involved in the scheme that urges customers to make a donation to the charity when they order tap water.
