Pleisure scooped the award for Best Drinks Offer at the recent MA200 awards for the country's top independent multiple retailers.

Managing director Nick Griffin was praised for his nine-strong chain of pubs in Brighton and London, which have specialised their drinks offer.

It has pubs that specialise in cask ale, American whisky and rum. For example, the St James in Brighton has a selection of 80 different rums while the Great Eastern in Brighton stocks 40 different bourbons.

"We look at the market and how we can do the drinks offer better," said managing director Nick Griffin.

"We try and create a USP and specialise a bit. We still have a great range alongside that so consumers are always getting a great offer but if you specialise they are going to get a really, really great offer."

He added that staff training throws up a number of challenges. "Learning is a key, exciting part of the business," he said.

"Learning about drinks — that's got to be exciting hasn't it?"
