MPs get a bad rap much of the time. Self-important, deluded, and "moronic" are just a few of the criticisms aimed their way.

But they're not all bad. And it was heartening to hear so many of the new crop of MPs sticking up for pubs in last week's Wesminster Hall debate on the industry's "future".

In this new era of coalition government, it's more important than ever for pubs to have people fighting their corner in the corridors of power.

For too long pubs have been a political football, but many who spoke on Thursday are either good actors, or actually know their onions (or beer).

Tory Karen Bradley, whose parents have run a pub for the last 43 years, showed a good grip of some of the key issues, like the beer tie and irresponsible supermarket pricing.

Another Conservative newy Therese Coffey, who revealed herself as a CAMRA member, spoke passionately about the issues, although admitted there are "some awful pubs in the country".

Meanwhile, Hove and Portslade MP, Mike Weatherly pointed out the importance of live music to pubs and how it has become more difficult to host since the licensing laws changed.

A handful of others also spoke up on subjects such as duty, planning and the smoking ban.

Relative veteran, Lib Dem Greg Mulholland, a well-known face to many in the trade as scourge of the pubcos, seemed genuinely pleased that so many MPs had turned out and shown a depth of understanding - especially as it was on the same day as the tuition fees debate and vote.

Pubs minister Bob Neill was also there to offer reassurance he is on the case for the industry on many of the issues. Although a below-cost ban still seems some way off.

Talk is cheap, especially when it comes to politicians. But with so much of the proverbial hitting the fan at the moment, it's good to know we have MPs on board on the issues that count for licensees. Let's just see if they can have any influence...
