Managed operator JD Wetherspoon opened its last pub of 2010 today — and its fourth in Brighton.

Managed operator JD Wetherspoon opened its last pub of 2010 today.

The Post and Telegraph on North Street in the city centre is its fourth site in Brighton & Hove.It already has sites in West Street, Brighton Marina and in Hove.

The latest opening sparked controversy because it's located in a Cumulative Impact Zone — and prompted strong local opposition from a residents' association, a councillor, businesses and Sussex Police prior to the meeting.

But it occupies a site that has opened and closed a number of times — at one stage it was a sports bar called Gentleman's Turf.

Councillor Denise Cobb, chairwoman of the licensing panel, told a local newspaper in July: "It was a difficult decision because the premises already had a licence so it was a good opportunity for us to change it for the better.

"The company that have taken over the premises have a good reputation of engaging with the community and we hope they are successful in doing so."
