Former British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) director of brewing Dr David Long has been awarded an MBE and Everard's chairman Richard Everard an OBE.

Everard was rewarded for his service to the community in Leicestershire and his charity work.

Long worked at the BBPA for 28 years out of a total of 37 in the industry and was acting BBPA chief executive for nine months prior to the appointment of Brigid Simmonds in 2009.

He championed greatly improved environmental performance in the brewing process, overseeing 30 years of efficiency gains in energy and water use.

He was a key driver in maintaining and improving the quality of beer, not just in the UK, but across Europe and the rest of the world, through his involvement with the European Union and Brewers of Europe and the World Wide Brewing Alliance.

On beer and health, he played a leading role in establishing the European Advisory Research Board (ERAB), which funds medical and scientific research into the effects of alcohol consumption.

His advice on allergen labelling has been of significant benefit to brewers across the continent.

He has also overseen grant support for hop and barley research, enhancing a sustainable source of natural home-grown products used to brew British beer.

"This recognition for David Long's achievements in the UK brewing industry will delight not just all of us at the BBPA, but also the huge numbers of people David has worked with since he joined the industry in 1973," said Simmonds.

"He has made a huge contribution to the British brewing industry over 37 years, on the environment, on product quality, in social responsibility and in research and development.

"David's enormous expertise, wisdom, and sheer generosity with his vast brewing knowledge, will continue to be called upon for many years to come. This award couldn't be more well deserved."
