Bedfordshire-based Charles Wells Pub Company has appointed Craig Mayes to the board as operations director.

The 30-year-old took up his position on 1 January after previously serving as director of operations, head of operations of John Bull Pub Company in France and retail development manager at Charles Wells.

Mayes will have specific responsibility for the ongoing development of the company's relationship with its licensees.

He will manage a team, of four experienced retail development managers and the new post of retail development executive.

Mayes is helping to finalise a package of support to help those licensees whose business was adversely affected by December's poor weather.

The company is to hold price increases on home brewed draught beers and run a number of promotions to drive sales in its pubs.

"Without our fantastic licensees we wouldn't have a business, so developing a close working relationship and appropriate support package with them through our operations team is critical," said Anthony Wallis, managing director of Charles Wells Pub Company.

"The appointment of an operations director to the Board reflects the importance we place on this partnership and Craig has already demonstrated great leadership and the ability to implement change that is needed to develop our customer relations further."

Pressures

Mayes added: "I believe we have some of the best pubs in the areas we operate in and are in a great position to thrive during the uncertainty of the current economy.

"My immediate priorities are to improve the overall sustainability of our pubs, listen to customer feedback, act on that feedback, continue to develop our relationships with licensees and to encourage them to engage in their local communities."

"I'll be working with the Charles Wells team to develop new and innovative ways to help licensees attract consumers into their pubs, despite the backdrop of austerity measures and pressure on leisure time and spend."
