Charles Wells has acquired its first pub since summer 2009 — the Knife and Cleaver in Bedfordshire.

The Houghton Conquest 17th century pub will undergo a refurbishment to improve the living and trading areas including the letting rooms.

It is positioned close to several towns, the site earmarked for a Centre parcs development and aquarium project in nearby Stewartby.

Charles Wells is looking for a suitable licensee to run the new pub.

"The Knife and Cleaver is a 17th Century inn of great character and is a fantastic addition to our estate," said Richard Burt, commercial and property director.

"It's previously enjoyed a good reputation in the surrounding area and attracted diners from across the County and we hope that a redevelopment we have planned will help restore it to its rightful position as a dining pub of choice."

"We're looking for experienced operators to come on board as early as possible so that we can work together on the redevelopment and offer the support to help them provide a great pub experience."
