It is shaping up to be one of the final chances to grab a beer group of any scale. Foster's is preparing to split itself into two, triggering a race for both its wine and beer divisions. The Melbourne-based drinks group is expected to announce plans to demerge its host of well-known lagers from their unsuccessful marriage with the grape next week. Its Treasury Wine Estates arm - maker of Penfolds, Wolf Blass, and Rosemount - is uncorking itself from Carlton United Breweries (CUB), owner of Foster's. London-listed SAB Miller is mulling a £7bn move on CUB but is likely to face stiff competition from Japan's Asahi Breweries - Daily Mail

A mother told an inquest yesterday how a female paramedic refused to come into a pub to treat her daughter. Melissa Procter-Blain, 32, fell in the toilets in July 2009. Her mum Diane Page said the paramedic "just stood by the door saying she couldn't come in". Her stepdad John said she "kept saying 'I'm not going in. I'm frightened; it's got a bad reputation'. I begged that girl to help and she refused". Melissa was using a wheelchair after a knee operation following a fall in the same pub, the Crown, in Spondon, Derby, two months earlier.
