Problem drinkers in Pendle, Lancashire, could face a two-year ban from the town's pubs and clubs if they are convicted of an alcohol-related offence.

It is the first time Drink Banning Orders (DBO) have been used in the area since the legislation was introduced two years ago.

The orders can last from between two months and two years and anyone who breaches a DBO is liable for a fine of up to £2,500.

Police said the measures are used to back up partnerships authorities have forged with licensees.

Inspector Paul Leigh said: "The DBOs will support the Borough's three successful Pub Watch schemes that currently exclude around 110 people from licensed premises in the Nelson, Colne and West Craven areas.

"In an effort to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder, we regularly visit premises throughout the Borough. With the co-operation of the licensees and their staff, the number of incidents has significantly reduced in and around the pubs and clubs within the Pendle area.

Maggie Owens, licensee of the Union Exchange pub, added: "The introduction of Drink Banning Orders for all alcohol related convictions will add extra support for Pendle licensees and help them to make the pubs and clubs a safer environment for themselves, their staff and customers.

"Licensees and off licence retailers within the Borough will continue to support the police and local authority in reducing alcohol related crime even further."
