An innovative Pubwatch group has taken the unusual step of publicly naming and shaming 20 known troublemakers on its Facebook group.

Licensees from Musselburgh and District Pubwatch group have revealed the name of 17 men and three women who are currently banned from venues in the area.

The length of each individual's ban has also been published next to their name. One has a lifetime ban, while the most lenient will see three people's ban end this November.

"We didn't want a small minority of people spoiling nights out for the vast majority who are supportive of Pubwatch," said a spokesman for the group.

"With the Facebook page, we checked with Lothian and Borders Police and they said as long as we didn't include personal details then it was all legal. We wanted to name and shame them and it seems to be working."

The Facebook page also sets out why somebody appears on the list. The first question asks: "Why am I on Pubwatch?" And the answer given is: "Because, we, the licensees of Musselburgh, have deemed your behaviour on our premises unacceptable."

Councillor John Caldwell, who represents Musselburgh East and Carberry, said: "It's a great scheme. People go out for a drink to socialise and have a relaxing time without expecting any problems. By sharing this information between the pubs, they can keep out troublemakers and ensure people are safe."

A police spokesman said: "The Pubwatch scheme allows venues to share information on individuals who present a potential risk.

"Anyone ejected for violent, threatening or disorderly behaviour will subsequently find themselves barred."

One Facebook user, commenting on the named and shamed list, said: "Think this is a brilliant idea, more towns and villages should be doing this too. They should also be allowed to publish photos as well."
