George Osborne, the chancellor, has promised not to announce any new tax increases or spending cuts in this week's Budget. Mr Osborne is hoping to promote this week's statement as a "budget for growth" amid mounting concern over the fragility of Britain's economic recovery. In an interview yesterday, the Chancellor said: "Having undertaken the rescue mission last year, I don't have to come back and ask for more this year." Taxes levied on businesses will be simplified and reduced while planning law will be streamlined to encourage enterprise - Daily Telegraph

Men are being urged to cut down on the amount of salt they eat, as research has found traditional pub pies contain more salt than 15 bags of crisps. A report by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) named and shamed pub chain JD Wetherspoon for having the highest levels of salt in its pie and mash meals. JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "JD Wetherspoon is working closely with its food suppliers, development chefs and the Food Standards Agency to reduce the level of salt in all of its meals. "We take on board the findings of this report and we will take steps to reduce the level of salt in both these meals in the coming months." - Western Mail

There were no shocks on Thursday when Scotland manager Craig Levein named his squad to take on Brazil at the Emirates Stadium on March 27. However, the strict ban on alcohol which has been in place at these gatherings since he replaced George Burley in December 2009 will be lifted when the players travel to their sports complex in La Manga on Monday. The group will be given free time for team bonding sessions, which will include being allowed to drink, at the start of their five-day stay in Spain - Daily Telegraph
