Alcohol advertising should be banned from all television screens and sporting events to remove its "profound and unhealthy" influence on young people, claim doctors. Britain has the worst youth drinking problem in Europe apart from Denmark with alcohol associated with almost a quarter of all deaths in teenagers and young adults, they say. Now doctors are supporting a private members bill by a Tory MP and former GP to introduce a law banning any drink advertising that might be seen by children - Daily Telegraph

Anti-smoking campaigners have called for a continued effort to reduce more than 13,000 smoking-related deaths every year in Scotland, ahead of Saturday's fifth anniversary of the public smoking ban. Sheila Duffy, chief executive of anti-tobacco charity ASH Scotland, said research has shown that "Scotland is a healthier nation for having introduced smoke-free public places", but said Scotland must continue to take "all steps necessary" to reduce deaths further - Press Association

The trade body for pubs across Scotland has called for Old Firm games to be played on Monday evenings in a bid to minimise trouble surrounding the fixtures. The Scottish Licensed Trade Association (SLTA) believes that holding the matches on the "quietest night of the week" in Glasgow will limit the time fans can consume alcohol around games between Celtic and Rangers - Scotsman
