Anglia Pub Company, the group led by ex-Punch business development manager Garry Clark, has taken on its sixth site in East Anglia — the Old Cannon Brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The business is set up as a brewery, bar, brasserie and bed and breakfast, all centrally located in the historic market town.

Brewing ceased in 1917 and the pub closed its doors in 1995 but, following conversion of the old brewhouse to bed and breakfast accommodation, the pub reopened as the Old Cannon Brewery in 1999. It has a 50-cover main bar and restaurant, with two stainless-steel brewing vessels housed within the bar area.

The premises are held on a new 15-year lease, which was sold for an undisclosed sum, with a private landlord — and initial rent is set at £45,000pa. Bill Colquhoun, of Christie+Co, which handled the sale, said: "The unique qualities of the business and rare availability of free-of tie-leases in Bury St Edmunds attracted multiple offers, proving quality businesses will always attract interest from the market."
