Mike Coupe, supermarket industry veteran and current group commercial director of Sainsbury's, has been appointed a non-executive director at Greene King.

Coupe will also sit on Greene King's audit committee when he joins the company on 26 July.

In his current role, Coupe is responsible for trading, marketing, IT and online strategy at Sainsbury's. Before joining the supermarket giant, he was a director of the Big Food Group and managing director of Iceland Food Stores. He has also held senior management roles at ASDA and Tesco.

Greene King chairman Tim Bridge said: "We look forward to welcoming Mike Coupe to our board and believe that the multi-site retailing and commercial experience he brings will be a great asset to us."

This appointment brings the number of non-executives at Greene King to five, including the chairman.
