Pubs outside the capital were the latest to come under siege in the rioting that has hit the country. Many pubs in the capital shut early — during peak trading hours — on police advice and to ensure staff could get home safely.

Premises in Manchester, Salford, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, West Bromwich, Nottingham, Liverpool and the Wirral were all targeted by rioters last night.

There were also small outbreaks of disorder reported in Reading, Oxford, Milton Keynes and Cardiff.

Many pubs in the capital shut early — during peak trading hours — on police advice and to ensure staff could get home safely.

Mitchells & Butlers shut a number of its All Bar One chain in south London early including Richmond, Wimbledon and Sutton and took precautions, including removing all bottles from the back bar. Portuguese restaurant chain Nando's closed 78 of its 250-strong estate.

In London it was a quieter night with 81 arrests, bringing the total number of arrests since disorder began on Saturday night to 768 - 167 people have been charged. There were 16,000 police officers in the capital- five times more than a normal Tuesday night.

In Enfield 70 members of the public took to the streets to protect their community from violence and looting. Many pubs in Enfield closed early with Mitchells & Butlers George pub closing at 8:30pm last night.

The JD Wetherspoon pub Moon Under Water closed at 10pm as a precaution but manager Kerry Simmonds said: "The march was a peaceful protest with people walking along the main streets in Enfield."

While in Southall, west London, hundreds of Sikh men stood guard outside a temple.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who is to chair the Cabinet's emergency committee Cobra for the second day, condemned the "sickening scenes of people looting, vandalising, thieving, robbing".

He said: "If you are old enough to commit these crimes, you are old enough to face the punishment."

An e-petition is circulating demanding that all rioters convicted of criminal acts during the riots should have all their financial benefits removed. This morning the petition had been signed by over 43,000 people.
