The former Limelight Club on London’s Shaftesbury Avenue has been sold for £8.25m to a private investor.

The 12,000 square foot venue was formerly part of the Regent Inns estate when it went into administration in 2010. It was then snapped up by Danish owners who were represented by leisure property agent Shelley Sandzer in this current sale.

“There was an incredible amount of interest in this iconic building, which was once one of London’s top nightclubs,” said Nick Weir, director at Shelley Sandzer.

“It’s likely that the new owner will look for a new operator pretty quickly given the busy location of the building in the heart of London’s West End entertainment district.”

The venue was originally a Welsh Presbyterian church dating from the 1890s, and was best known as The Limelight. It reached the height of its popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s.

However, the club’s popularity waned leading to its closure and take over by Australian pub chain Walkabout, which ceased trading in 2010.
