Licensees and staff at four Blackpool pubs are being trained by North West Ambulance Service to use defibrillators in case of emergencies.

Blackpool Pubwatch led the initiative to install defibrillators in the four pubs in the town centre.

The defibrillators, portable devices that can help cardiac-arrest victims, are not only for use by the pub as staff can be called out to local areas where there may be an emergency.

Pubwatch chairman Craig Southall said the issue came up in a pubwatch meeting and now pubs on
the South Coast are also planning to have defibrillators installed.

He said: “We know a lot of daytime venues have the equipment, but they’re only open until 5pm. We’re open a lot longer than that.

“They’re also not just for the pubs. If anyone nearby has had a heart attack, the ambulance will contact us and a member of staff can take it to that person.

“It’s for the local area. If something happens, then we’ve increased someone’s chances of survival. It’s a very positive thing.”
