Devonshire Arms takes Scotch egg crown
Young’s pub the Ship Inn, Wandsworth, hosted the event that saw 33 esteemed pubs enter.
Each entrant’s egg was judged on appearance, smell, texture and taste with a maximum five points awarded in each category. Each egg could be awarded a maximum of 20 by the five judges, which would give a score out of 100.
Enterprise Inns lease the Devonshire Arms, formerly owned and operated by Gordon Ramsay and taken over in June by Nick Gibson of Islington’s Drapers Arms, took top points with 83 out of 100 for its Haggis and Burford Brown recipe.
Joint runners up were Real Pubs site the Old Dairy in Stroud Green and London Brewing Company pub the Bull and Last in Highgate, which both scored 79.
Each chef was allocated 15 minutes in the kitchen to make their 10 eggs with the competition taking three hours. The eggs were given out to the crowd to get opinions flowing as well as to the judges, who included Chris Pople, MiMi Aye, Mat Follas and David Constable.
The event was organised on Twitter with commentary provided on the night by Douglas Blyde.
