First pub gets two Michelin stars

The first British pub — the Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire — has been awarded two Michelin stars in the latest Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2012.

The pub was opened by Tom and Beth Kerridge in 2005 and received its first Michelin star the following year.

Last year the guide’s former long-standing and now retired editor Derek Bulmer said a pub was not a “million miles” away from gaining the top accolade.

Three pubs were awarded one star for the first time. These include the Sir Charles Napier, Chinnor, Buckinghamshire; Butchers Arms, Eldersfield, Worcestershire and the Black Swan, Oldstead, North Yorkshire.

Editor Rebecca Burr said “This is a good news story for the British pub industry and confirms our view that pubs serving good food are the ones that continue to thrive. In the 2012 guide we are delighted to have 13 pubs with Michelin stars”.
