A former Great British Pub of the Year winner has sold his gastropub to Greene King of a guide price of £1.2m.

Dave Sax won the top Publican’s Morning Advertiser award in 2007 for the Cow in Ashley Cross, Poole, after having owned it for just four years.

The pub is a gastro cum bistro venue with a private dining room, used mainly for business lunches, meetings and small conferences.

The bistro menu features dishes such as roast hake fillet, clam, chorizo, wild garlic and tomato broth (£16.50) and roast breast and braised leg of guinea fowl, white truffle mash, sautéed asparagus and chestnut mushrooms with thyme jus (£16.95).

“The Cow offers a wonderful mix of the traditional and the contemporary, and has established a well-earned reputation as a superb gastropub — as evidenced by the numerous awards it has received and the considerable repeat business it attracts,” said Ed Bellfield, director at Christie + Co, which handled the sale.

“The Cow was always going to arouse substantial market interest and we are delighted that the renowned operator Greene King has acquired the pub.”

Sax also owns the Museum Inn in Farnham, Dorset, which is under offer.
